A moderate to major geomagnetic storm (Kp=5-6) has taken place
between yesterday March 18, around 20:00UT, until today around 9:00UT.It was caused by a new rise of the solar wind speed to 650km/s, with
simultaneous Southward excursions of the Bz component of the IMF. All
ground-based magnetographs currently show a decrease of the geomagnetic
activity. However, as the solar wind speed stays high, we still expect
possible active to minor storm surges in the next 12 to 24h. This
geomagnetic activity should progressively settled down, to return to
quiet conditions by March 21st. On the Sun, active region Catania#14
(NOAA0862) at disc center has shown a moderate growth over the last 24
hours (now type D sunspot group, Beta magnetic configuration). At this
stage, it could produce a few C-flares.
