Radio waves from the Vatican have been linked to a higher rate of cancer in children living nearby.

A court-ordered study has found electromagnetic waves beamed by Vatican Radio put residents living within a nine-kilometre radius of the station's antennas at a higher risk of contracting cancer.
Italy's daily La Stampa newspaper says the report also found alink between Vatican Radio and leukaemia and lymphoma in children.

Vatican Radio director Federico Lombardi disputes the report, saying since 2001 the station has observed stricter guidelines to allay emissions concerns.

A 2001 investigation by Italy's environment ministry found magnetic fields in the area were six times stronger than allowed.

The Vatican says it will publish its own experts' report soon.
