Omeo residents left shivering with no power
By Mark Debono

Posted 28 minutes ago

Map: Omeo 3898 Residents of Omeo, in the Victorian high country, are shivering through one of their coldest mornings of the year without electricity.

The power went off at 5:00pm (AEST) and the temperature this morning has dropped to minus 3 degrees Celsius.

The power will not be restored for some time.

Joe Adamo from power company S-P AusNet says the power was shut off last night after a malfunctioning regulator caused big voltage swings in the system. He says every house and power meter in the town will have to be checked by inspectors before power is restored.

"We've got a team of inspectors going up to Omeo," he said.

"We hope by the end of the day, as a realistic, conservative approach, that every home and business will be secure."
